Devlog: Gear Progression - Part 2

Completing classic gear sets for newer classes.

devlog

Hello everyone! đź‘‹

In our previous devlog, we covered the foundations of our gear progression system: upgrades, enchanting, and infusion. Today we’re tackling something equally important: making sure every class can fully experience classic content.

When these level 60 classic-era gear sets were originally introduced (Visionmaker, Nightforge, Regent, and others), classes like Reaper, Gunner, Brawler, and Valkyrie didn’t exist yet. This left a gap in the progression experience. These newer classes simply had no weapons or armor in some of the most iconic gear sets.

We’re fixing that.

Important: we're still in development. Values and mechanics may change as we test, balance, and gather feedback.

At a Glance

  • Reaper: 13 missing chain scythes added
  • Brawler: 2 crafted gauntlets added
  • Missing chest armor: 12 pieces added
  • Crafting recipes: 19 added
  • Legacy tooltips: 1,080+ restored
  • Enchant roll pools: standardized for all endgame gear

The Challenge

Building missing gear isn’t just about copying stats from existing items. Each piece needs to:

  • Match each set’s identity (Visionmaker’s naming style, Nightforge’s tone, etc.)
  • Follow lore-accurate naming conventions, which required researching existing items in each set
  • Have proper stats and bonuses, matching the power level and role of equivalent items

Reaper: The Biggest Restoration

The Reaper class was the most challenging to complete. Unlike other newer classes that only needed a few items here and there, we backfilled the level 60 progression chain for Reaper across 13 key sets.

We created chain scythes for every major level 60 set, from Thalnim all the way to Nightforge. Each weapon was carefully named to match the style of its set. For example, Dreamscythes for Visionmaker (following the “Dream-” prefix pattern) and Shardfangs for Nightforge (following the aggressive, sharp naming convention).

Brawler Weapons

The Brawler class also needed gauntlets for the crafted gear sets. We created:

Chest Armor for All Classes

Beyond weapons, we also needed to fill the gaps in chest armor. The following sets were missing chest pieces for Gunner, Brawler, Valkyrie, and Reaper:

That’s 12 new chest pieces ensuring every class has complete gear sets.

Chest Armor Skill Bonuses

Chest armor in TERA has always featured a “top line” bonus that increases damage for specific skills. However, these bonuses weren’t always consistent across gear sets and classes.

We’ve standardized these skill bonuses to ensure every class has appropriate top line (skill bonus) options on endgame chest pieces across Archetype, Devastator, Nightforge, Regent, and Visionmaker sets.

Crafting Recipes Added

What good are new items if you can’t craft them?

We created 19 crafting recipes for the new weapons and armor:

  • Visionmaker: 4 weapon recipes + 4 armor recipes
  • Nightforge PVE: 4 weapon recipes + 4 armor recipes (upgrade path from Visionmaker)
  • Dreamkeeper: 3 weapon recipes

Each recipe comes with its own Design item that players learn to unlock the crafting pattern.

Enchant Stat Standardization

Legacy Tooltips Restored

In later versions of TERA, many classic crafting materials and designs had their tooltips changed to messages like “This item is no longer usable” or “This recipe is worn and useless.”

We’ve restored the original tooltips for over 1,000 items:

  • 207 crafting materials
  • 873 design recipes

Now when you pick up a crafting material or design, you’ll see proper descriptions instead of deprecation messages.
